Homemade Anti-Inflammatory Dog Ice Cream Recipe

This recipe shows you a pretty unique homemade dog ice cream recipe with anti-inflammatory properties, so you can keep your dog cool this summer and boost their nutrients with a little bit of natural spices (it’s turmeric!).

homemade anti-inflammatory dog ice cream recipe

This recipe is like the upgraded version of my classic peanut butter and banana dog ice cream, just with a few nourishing extras.

I added a cooked apple, which honestly goes great in this recipe! And it adds that natural sugar dogs absolutely adore it.

I’ve tasted it myself, and cooked apple works perfectly here. Honestly, I eat these frozen treats all the time, and so does my whole family!

This dog ice cream recipe is great for all dogs, even puppies. But if you have a senior dog, you’re really going to love it. I actually made it with older dogs in mind, especially those who could use a little natural joint support. That’s where the turmeric comes in.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 ripe banana, mashed
  • 2 tablespoons Greek yogurt
  • 1 teaspoon peanut butter
  • 2 tablespoons cooked apple puree, (1/4 apple, peeled, no seeds or skin)
  • ⅛ tsp turmeric

Instructions

  1. To make the cooked apple puree, you need to peel, core, and chop a small apple and use about 1/4 apple. Chop it into small pieces, simmer in water, and cook for about 10 minutes until it’s soft enough to mash it with a fork.
  2. Cool it under cold water.
  3. Then, mash it with a fork to make the puree. If you have natural apple puree at home (baby food) without added sugar or additives, you can use that one as well.
  4. In a bowl, mash the banana and add the Greek yogurt, peanut butter, cooled apple puree, and turmeric. Mix until smooth.
  5. Pour the mixture into a silicone mold or ice cube tray.
  6. Freeze for at least 4 hours or overnight.
  7. Serve 1-2 pieces at a time as a cooling, anti-inflammatory treat.
  8. Depending on your dog’s size, you can give them more.

Serving Size

Makes about 18 small treats, depending on the size of your molds. I give my 5 kg (11 lbs) dog two frozen treats a day, and he absolutely loves them!

Storage

Store in a zip lock bag in the freezer for up to 3 weeks.

Dog Inspector Tips

  • Use premade baby food apple puree if you have a sugar-free, additive-free version. Don’t use anything with artificial sweeteners!
  • If your dog doesn’t eat peanut butter and fatty foods, you can make this one without peanut butter.
  • You can use cottage cheese instead of Greek yogurt. Cottage cheese is a great source of calcium and has lots of protein!
  • Don’t use sour cream as a replacement, as it’s too fatty.
  • You can use almond yogurt or coconut yogurt (if your dog is lactose intolerant), and if they have added probiotics, then they will have somewhat similar benefits.

But the key with my dog ice cream recipes is to choose whole foods.

I don’t like artificial replacements, foods that are stripped of their primary nutrients (like fat-free yogurts or cottage cheese), as the whole point is to get the best and wholesome nutrients from each food.

Why I Love It

This version of the anti-inflammatory dog ice cream feels a little extra special. I made it for my dog during a hot week when I wanted to help him cool down and sneak in a few functional ingredients.

Here’s why these ingredients are awesome:

  • Bananas – High in potassium, fiber, and vitamin C. A gentle, natural base for frozen treats.
  • Greek Yogurt – Rich in probiotics and protein. Great for gut and immune support.
  • Peanut Butter – Full of healthy fats and a great source of protein. Dogs’ favorite treat!
  • Cooked Apple – Mild on the stomach, great for digestion, naturally sweet.
  • Turmeric – Anti-inflammatory spice, good for joint health!

More About Turmeric and My Anti-Inflammatory Dog Treats

Turmeric is known for its anti-inflammatory properties due to its active compound, curcumin.

Curcumin blocks inflammatory pathways in the body and lowers the production of enzymes that cause joint swelling and stiffness.

That makes it a good choice for senior dogs that need extra joint care. But since it’s a natural ingredient and super easy to sneak into food or homemade treats, it’s recommended for all dogs.

When you buy spices, please buy them from a trusted shop or brand so you know they are tested for heavy metals and that they are safe!
